History
After the abolition of serfdom in 1861, industry began to develop rapidly in Russia — new enterprises emerged, joint-stock companies were formed, and investment increased. Following the construction of the Moscow–Kursk and Ryazhsk–Vyazma railways, Tula became an important railway transit hub. The question arose of supplying the industrial centre of Russia with pig iron and of building an iron smelting plant in Tula.

Construction began on the Sudakovsky (now Kosogorsky) metallurgical plant.
- 1897

The first pig iron was tapped from the first blast furnace.
By the end of the year, 1.5 million poods of foundry pig iron had been smelted.

The second blast furnace was put into operation.

Peak pig iron production. The plant smelted 91 thousand tonnes.

The plant was mothballed due to the economic downturn in the country.

and a shell shop was built to fulfil military orders.

In connection with the revolutionary events in the country, blast furnace No. 1 was shut down.

Blast furnace No. 2, the power station and cement production were shut down.
The plant was nationalised.

The Tula Provincial Executive Committee gave the plant the name "Kosogorsky
Metallurgical Plant named after F.E. Dzerzhinsky".

The government issued a decision on the development of KMZ.
Construction of blast furnace No. 3 began in December.

The 100th and 10th most powerful blast furnace in the USSR — Kosogorsky
blast furnace No. 3 with a volume of 697 cubic metres — was blown in. The capacity
of the blast furnace shop increased fourfold, and pig iron output rose to 159 thousand tonnes.

German occupation. KMZ was evacuated to the Ural city of Lysva.

Restoration of the enterprise began.

Modernisation of foundry production: a shot-blasting chamber was
installed in the foundry, and the IST-2 induction steel-smelting furnace
was commissioned.
On the eve of Metallurgist Day — a professional holiday — the enterprise's flag with the plant's corporate symbols was raised at JSC "KMZ" for the first time.
A third crushing-and-screening complex for processing blast furnace production waste was commissioned. The new equipment began producing fractionated slag gravel for construction and road-building work.
JSC "KMZ" obtained a certificate of compliance with GOST 3344-83 for its secondary product — slag gravel for road construction.
Blast furnace No. 1 was shut down at JSC "KMZ" for dismantling work in connection with first-class capital repairs.

Casting technology for blast furnace cooling plates was mastered.
The secondary product line was expanded.
Construction of the nitrogen plant, required for the operation of the bell-less charging device and the dry gas cleaning system, was completed.

Construction of the dry gas cleaning system was completed,
and the equipment was commissioned.
The large-scale modernisation of the blast furnace No. 1 complex was completed.

The 80th anniversary of the plant's newspaper "Kosogorets". Publication
began at the enterprise in 1931 with a print run of 3,000 copies.

JSC "KMZ" was renamed PJSC "KMZ" (Public Joint-Stock Company "Kosogorsky Metallurgical Plant"), with the full corporate name in English: Joint-Stock Company "Kosaya Gora Iron Works" or JSC "KGIW".
PJSC "KMZ" received the "Tula Brand 2014" award in the "Industrial Enterprises" category.

On 8 May 2022, PJSC "KMZ" celebrated its 125th anniversary.
On 18 May 2022, blast furnace No. 1 at PJSC "KMZ" was brought back on line after a long shutdown.
The technical re-equipment project for the gas cleaning system of blast furnace No. 1 is underway.
Second-class capital repairs were carried out on hot-blast stove No. 9, as well as second-class capital repairs of blast furnace No. 3.
After a large-scale reconstruction, casting machine No. 2 in the casting machine section of the blast furnace shop is ready for operation.
